This case study will provide participants with an opportunity to look at their experience of sickle cell disease from a personal and spiritual perspective. Transpersonal hypnotherapy will be used to explore thoughts and experiences that may be difficult to examine during everyday life.
Six sessions will take place over a period of six weeks. Each session will last 1½ hours. Participants will have time to talk about anything they would like to address before entering hypnosis. Following the session, they will be able to describe what they noticed and reflect on their experience.
Living with sickle cell can influence how a person relates to their body. Participants may choose to explore that relationship during the sessions. They might look at how they respond to pain or how past experiences have shaped their feelings toward their body. The sessions may also provide an opportunity to explore what helps them feel supported during difficult periods.
Personal experiences may lead the sessions in different directions. A participant may want to revisit an experience connected to sickle cell. Someone else may be interested in exploring how the condition has affected their confidence or sense of identity. The focus will depend on what each participant feels ready to examine.
Spiritual exploration may also arise naturally during the process. Participants can reflect on the meaning they have found in their experiences. They may explore their connection to their inner self or consider questions they have carried throughout their journey.
The study is intended to provide greater insight into the lived experience of sickle cell disease. Each participant will have space to explore their own story without being expected to have a particular type of experience. The study does not examine hypnotherapy as a treatment or cure for sickle cell disease.
