Can everyone be hypnotized? For most people, hypnosis is much more familiar than they may realize. We naturally move in and out of focused states throughout the day without calling it hypnosis.
Have you ever been driving somewhere familiar and suddenly realized you’ve traveled several miles without remembering every detail of the drive? Maybe you’ve become so absorbed in a movie that you barely noticed what was happening around you. You might also get lost in music, daydream while looking out a window or become completely focused on a book. These are examples of times when your attention becomes highly focused and your awareness of everything else can fade into the background. Hypnosis can involve a similar type of focused attention.
When it comes to hypnotherapy, being able to relax and focus can help you get more comfortable with the process. Your willingness to participate also matters. Hypnosis isn’t something that has to be forced on you. You’re an active participant in the session.
Another thing I believe can make a difference is finding a hypnotherapist you resonate with. You may feel more comfortable with one person’s voice, personality or approach than another’s. Feeling comfortable with the person guiding your session can make it easier to relax and focus on what you’re doing.
Your environment can also make a difference. Having a quiet and comfortable place where you won’t be interrupted can help you stay focused. If you’re doing a virtual session, having a reliable internet connection and a headset with a microphone can also help you hear your hypnotherapist clearly.
Try not to put pressure on yourself to experience hypnosis in a specific way. Some people feel extremely relaxed. Some notice changes in their body. Others become absorbed in their thoughts or imagery. You may remember everything that happens during your session. You may also notice that your sense of time changes. It’s also helpful to understand that hypnosis doesn’t involve losing control. You’re still able to communicate and you’re still an active part of the process.
If you’ve been wondering whether you’re able to experience hypnosis, the best way to find out may be to experience it for yourself. Finding a hypnotherapist you feel comfortable with can be an important part of that experience.
