One question I hear about hypnosis is whether it’s possible to get stuck in hypnosis. This is another idea that has been heavily influenced by movies and television. Hypnosis can look mysterious when it’s portrayed as someone being completely under another person’s control. In reality, hypnosis is a natural state of focused attention and relaxation.
You can’t get permanently stuck in hypnosis. Your mind and body naturally move between different levels of awareness throughout the day. Hypnosis is simply another state of awareness that you can enter and leave.
During a hypnotherapy session, you may become deeply relaxed. You might notice that your body feels heavy or light. You may become absorbed in your thoughts or imagery. You may also lose track of time or become so comfortable that you don’t feel like moving. These experiences can sometimes make people wonder if they’re actually going to come out of hypnosis. You will.
If I stop speaking during a session, you aren’t going to remain hypnotized forever. You can naturally come out of the relaxed state on your own. You can also open your eyes, move around or speak if you want to.
Sometimes people may feel like they were asleep during hypnosis because they became extremely relaxed or because their awareness shifted. That doesn’t mean they’re trapped in hypnosis. You may also hear everything that’s being said and remember the entire session afterward. This is one reason I don’t want people to feel afraid of becoming too relaxed during hypnotherapy. Being deeply relaxed doesn’t mean you’ve lost control. You’re still able to respond and make choices.
